2011 Farm Show

The state chapter of HLA again had a booth at the Farm Show in Harrisburg. This year several audio-visual features were added.

  • The new DVD produced by the national HLAA , “Learn About Hearing Loss”, was running continuously on a laptop computer provided by Steve Schultz, President of the Capital Region Chapter, who organized and managed the entire week-long operation.
  • I installed an induction loop in the booth, which served both to demonstrate the loop function to visitors, and to help booth staff hear visitors in that noisy environment
  • For those without T-coil equipped hearing aids, or no hearing aids at all, an induction loop receiver with headphones was available.
  • Winter weather challenges for the Farm Show are the norm, and this year was no exception, but crowds were large, and it was generally agreed that the HLA booth was a valuable effort.

Holiday Party

The chapter celebrated the holiday season at the recent meeting with raspberry punch and a variety of holiday treats. Several visitors were present, and took part in the wide ranging discussions, mostly about dealing with hearing loss.
A few chapter members will again help at the Farm Show in Harrisburg in January. The state level organization, HLA-PA will sponsor a booth, and we will set up an induction loop for demonstration purposes.
The chapter does not meet in January and February; the next meeting will be on March 6, 2011.
We expect to return to the Jeanes Library eventually, but the timetable for the completion of their renovation and expansion program is not certain.

Looped at Shannondell

Largely at the instigation of MontCo HLA member Claire Fitzgerald, the Performing Arts Theatre at Shannondell at Valley Forge is now equipped with an induction loop system. My wife and I were guests of the Fitzgeralds there last night at a recital by pianist Jeffrey Uhlig and ‘cellist Hai-Ye Ni. It was superb!! Not just the music, but also the ability to hear the comments being made by Mr. Uhlig through the loop system. Hai-Ye Ni is Principal Cellist with the Philadelphia Orchestra. The loop was not used for the music, nor was the speaker system.
Public venues with loop systems are not common in the Philadelphia area, and the Shannondell PAT is for the benefit of the residents. We were there by the gracious invitation of the Fitzgeralds. According to Claire, the Main Line Unitarian Church and the Wayne Presbyterian Church have loop systems. They should be a standard feature of public facilities.
